I received one of these coins yesterday. Very nice looking coin. 2017-Barn-Owl-With-Photos-And-Questions

I gave it a look over and just by eye I could see some issues . I did look at the video in the other thread. This made me curious and now I have some questions about the process that the video does not answer and am hoping that the community can answer.

When they are going to electroplate the coin how or what do they do to not have the rhodium stick to the Queen's bust or owl's portrait? How do they do this outlining on 7000 coins to speed up the process?
Also there is to different finishes to the black(rhodium). On the obverse it is a flat black(almost antique like finish) and on the reverse it has a flat black and then in the middle night sky it is glossy. How is this achieved (any links would be helpful)?
I have included a couple of photos to show that issue is not consistent as I noticed it right away as I took the coin out of the box. It is not a consistent border on either side.

When it comes to grading coins like this do the TPG's take into consideration that the plating is not consistent on the borders of the busts, portraits and or fields ?
Is this just poor QC on the mints part?
Thanks for taking the time to look and answer.

Unfortunately I have no answer to your questions but thank for posting.

Your picture sure looks different from the one on the Mint's website http://www.mint.ca/store/coins/1-oz...WNcnLBSDBSU) How does it look in hand? Does everything except the owl look pitch-black?

Why not ask this question on the Mint's website? From what I read here they are not exactly well versed in the art of customer service but who knows, if you are lucky the marketing department may ask input from the production/quality control staff before sending you the answer.

Think your on the right track with that . Imho
like any other business The Mint no doubt looks
for cost effective production. This is bound to effect
QC. Just the cost of doing business.Save a buck to make 2.
Some slip through the cracks . It is nothing new to the business world . Of course this just an opinion

According to the mint web site only the moon or night sky on the the reverse is rhodium plated. So don't know what the black colour is on the rest of the coin. They do mention a gun metal grey.
It does not look like the picture that RCM shows. You can see the poor outlining on the reverse owl though but the obverse Queen does not show it in their rendition.
Seems like it would be next to impossible to get a PF70 grade if all the coins are like this one.

One more photo down around the chin which you can see in my first photo:

Thanks again.

When I watched the video, I had the same questions. I wonder if the un-plated areas are first pad-printed with a clear coating to resist the plating bath?

The matte area might be done with frosting on the die.
