Somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew to be on the lookout for brass cents while CRHing. I've seen some with a slightly "off" color, but nothing as prominent as this one. Pictures are with "normal" colored cents for comparison, taken in indirect sunlight.

Pretty sure it is just toning - I have some (from the 90's) that look like that as well, they look so much nicer with some color to them in my opinion.

I read somewhere that in time, the copper plating becomes more brassy from zinc mixing with copper over time from the planchets

Looks toned not a brass plated one.

I'll have to try for some better pictures later. The difference in hand is greater than what is showing up in the pictures posted.

Brass would look more of a yellowish tan, just toning

I have a couple 1983 Brass cents that are more yellowish than the 1997 cent I have, which is much like yours. I've not been overly certain of my 1997 cent being brass, but since putting it away, I haven't found another one like it. I'd hang onto that for now. Ken might have some additional detail to add should he spy the thread.

Over time the zinc builds up in the electroplate solution, from the blanks submerged in it. It's changed periodically, but sometimes the changer guy takes too long a lunch break. It results in brass-plated cents. Yours doesn't look like one to me, it should be a more obvious yellow, like this one.

I did a quick dig and pic. My alternate date is actually 1998. I did a quick side-by-side. The 1983 really stands out. As I said, I'm not too sure about the 1998 but I guess I was undecided enough to put it in a flip.

Druu, I'm just guessing, but I'd say the zinc levels were higher than normal but not high enough to constitute brass plating when your 97 was struck. I think the same applies to your 98 Rackster. jmo

I think you're right CM. Glad this thread came up though. I hadn't looked at those coins in quite awhile. The 1983 stands out, but the 1998 not as much. I do recall looking at Ken's listings back then and wondering what each year looks like. As noted, all it takes is a higher zinc content so in theory, any year they plate the cents this is possible. If controls are lacking, then we may have varying levels of brass/yellow.
