That gold plated 1896 Liberty nickel is quite something. I don't think I've seen one "converted" to a reeded edge before.

Sometimes the damage can be accidental.
But when there are parallel scratches along the value, there is no doubt, it was intentionally damaged.

Like this USA large cent. 1854. What a pain!
