I am fairly new to coin collecting and my collection is small at the moment. I actually found this coin about 8 years ago and its the coin that got me into wanting to start collecting unique and interesting pieces of history. unfortunately where I live there is not much in the way of actually finding out the history of coins. I have done my own research on it, although I still have not managed to find out any real or accurate information, heck, I'm not even sure if its a currency or not. Any sort of help would be appreciated. What language is used or a point of origin would be great. -Although not visible in the picture, there is a number engraved just to the left of the date. "925"

I'm inclined to think that it's some sort of medal since there isn't a value mark on there. I've got no idea where it's from or what it's depicting. A part of me was thinking that it could have Cyrillic letters on it, but those don't look Cyrillic to me. They look familiar though.

All I've found is that it depicts St. Sava, recognized as the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
His remains were burned in 1594 by the Ottomans and the Church of St. Sava was built on that site. That would explain "Sava" surrounded by flames on the reverse.
The 925 most likely means it is made of sterling silver.
I have no idea of the origin.

Well that makes sense. do you suppose these medals that they had were specific to each individual church or region? might be why I was never able to find one identical to it before.

The closest thing I've found is this on ebay: 272568753718It's similar and apparently is not silver.

well, any bit helps. This at least gives me a starting place where I can dig some more into it. Just one of those things that'll bug the heck out of me until I find out. Thanks :)

ACH, Spruett beat me to it again! This saint also appeared on military and religious ribbon badges, but this isn't since no ribbon eylet. Was awarded for achievement in arts and sciences as well, Nikolai Tesla was a recipient!
Language are Cyrillic characters, Russian or Baltic derivatives.

yeah its actually pretty cool. Just finished doing some reading on St.Sava after reading your post. I wasn't able to find my coin, but the history of the whole thing is very intriguing. I just finished checking and I do have a few St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Churches a few cities over and I would like to pay them a visit in person, see if anyone can give me some more information regarding this coin in particular. It is cool that the ribbons and badges were awarded for great accomplishments and even as badges of honor.

Quote: Language are Cyrillic characters, Russian or Baltic derivatives. I'm so sorry, but Cyrillic is not useful in Baltics officially .... Cyrillic name (Saint Sava)on obverse is really Serbian origin.
