What is up with these lincoln cents? Why is one gold toned and the other red toned? Are either of them worth checking out due to possibly being an error coin?

Not errors. The red one looks like environmental damage and the other looks like normal circulation toning.

The 1940 is naturally turning brown with age. They can turn red, red/brown, and brown. I do agree in this case though, the 1968 has been altered from the environment.

I'm thinking the 40 is gold paint.
