There seems to be a lot happening close to the obverse rim on this coin. I haven't seen this yet,So any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I hope others will weigh in, but my guess is that this is Die Deterioration that has amounted to crackly/crumbly rim areas.

To me it looks like something was struck onto the planchet when the coin was struck. Looks too irregular to be an attrition issue. Some areas look like grease near the rim. But over the devices, something is laying there.
