cwb Pillar of the Community United States 3463 Posts	Posted 03/30/2017 01:09 am to the forum! That is "Split Plate Doubling". It happens when the thin Copper plating gets stretched and cracks during the striking process, leaving the Zinc below it exposed. Cents that show this will be quick to deteriorate once moisture gets between the layers. If you keep it in that 2X2 holder, it will last longer. It looks like there is some Mechanical Doubling there too, that could have contributed to the Copper plate splitting. Edited by cwb 03/30/2017 01:11 am Report this Post to the Staff

On Die Deterioration, you don't see the zinc, unless it is split though the plating. Note: No zinc is showing. That is how you tell the difference between the two different issues.
