First off, I know anything remotely Chinese has been faked to death in recent years. This piece looks decent enough however and came with a bunch of older material, later 18th century - mid 20th.

Diameter 30 mm.

If anyone can shed any light on this piece would be hugely appreciated

It looks like a Chinese charm, token or gift shop item pertaining to richness, wealth, abundance, etc.

I don't think it's even Chinese in origin. The "characters" on the reverse are mostly total gibberish.

I guess I don't agree about gibberish. I translated enough to make my previous suggestion. It's just that the accuracy and context has some uncertainty so I cannot hit the nail on the head. Some of the characters do translate well enough to suggest what I replied with. Maybe someone else can do better. There is a lot of variance in the style of words so it can be hard to really get some of the words right during translation. This is especially true when coming across a modern rendition of a word compared to older styles.
I lean towards China because of the Dragon, flames and clouds but there could be Korean or Japanese influences.

That is a Chinese medal.
The Chinese letter on it says "long live and prosperous". (#38271;#21629;#23500;#36149; Chang Ming Fu Gui)
In the center, the word is "Han" which stands for China. (#28450;)

I'll buy that. Richness, wealth and abundance is close enough to prosperous.
The characters can be written in so many styles, it can be hard for a novice like me to translate.

@samyang9, it is very nice to have your translation ability here on CCF. That is a great skill for around here!

@Spence, that's my pleasure! I am from China and familiar with different writting styles of ancient Chinese.
