I like this big bronze coins of the Ptolemy's so I just picked this one up. The coin is a bronze diobol of Ptolemy VI and Ptolemy VIII and falls between 169 - 164 BC. Ptolemy VI Philometor (mother lover) ruled Egypt from 180 - 145 BC. He first became king at the age on 6 and ruled jointly with his mother Cleopatra I until her death. He married his sister Cleopatra II which was the custom in those days. They had four childern Ptolemy Eupator, Ptolemy Neos, Cleopatra Thea, an Cleopatra III. In 164 BC a war withe the Seleucid king Antioches IV Epiphanes over the control of Syria which caused unrest in Egypt. This cause Ptolemy to be overthrown by his brother Ptolemy VIII and his wife Cleopatra II. Ptolemy VI was driven out to Rome. This coin was struck between 169 -164 bBC when Ptolemy VI, Ptolemy VIII and Cleopatra II ruled together. AE Diobol 30.5mm x 25.4g x 12h Ref: Sear 7900 Ptolemy VI Ptolemy VIII as Pharoh Cleopatra II

Ron, that is a great coin. I got one of these guys fairly recently and they have superb heft. Feels like a hockey puck to me! As I recall, VK's description was food related: http://goccf.com/t/259622

Thanks Dave, this is a small one compared to some. I have my eye on a big one for sale now, hoping it doesn't go too high though I expect it to be expensive.

Fantastic pickup, Ron. What a nice example. I have always admired the Ptolemaic bronzes, and yours has held up really well through the centuries.

Don't know how I missed this first time round Ron Very nice pick up, no sign of any double strike on the reverse which makes the eagles nice and clear
