This is most likely common knowledge to most but while going through my (heavily unorganized) collection to find things to post on HFBCWG, I saw a dearth of early 1930s coins - U.S. & World. Fortunately I had one 1934 coin to post but have NO 1933 coins at all! That made me think," That's a good excuse to buy a coin!" I went searching for what I might like to add and discovered the gap in U.S. coins that I apparently had overlooked before. Anyway, for anyone wondering about that gap and/or decline in mintage (not just the U.S.) I found this article informative: http://www.coinweek.com/education/n...931-to-1933/I put this in the Main Forum because there are some descriptions of effects on other countries mintages and some suggestions for world coins to look for from that period. Spruett, yea, 1933 was a dearth year, when all gold recalled, big silver retention and melt, the gubmint beginning the first move toward equality for all...oh, off topic! Look at the mintages of the cent: 1933P = 14.4 mil 1934P - 210.1 mil 1933D = 6.2 mil 1934D = 29.4 mil 1933S = 0 1934S = 0 Everything was pretty much in the toilet among the financial institutions, the "hobos" were on the move, the "Depression" had finally taken its toll on the large cities like it had in the twenties to the farmers. No wonder a 31S Lincoln is a Key date! At least the Germans had Cool Notgeld when their economy tanked! This is out of porceln!

USSR also had troubles in 1931-33, I believe, though I'm not sure how related they are to the Great Depression. The silver 10, 15 and 20 kopek coins of 1931 are about as rare as the 1933 US $10 coins (if not rarer). I happened to check the dates in my Numista collection a few days ago, and I only have three different coins each from 1933 and 1934 (four from 1932, and five from 1931). I do not believe any of them are US coins. (For comparison, I have 23 coins from 1924, and the earliest year from which I have three different coins is 1666.) Incidentally, I'm planning to post the first coin of my collection tomorrow, since it happens to be an 1932; it's extremely ugly.

The great depression didn't happen just here in the US. It's effects were felt world wide.

Very interesting article, thanks for sharing! I also don't believe I have any coins from 1931-1933 in my collection. I would definitely like to change that!

Interesting... I never thought of 1933 to be a harder year for world coins. From that year, I have three world coins, which is my second highest amount in the 1930s (the highest is 1938 at five, and it is tied with 1937 at three). 1932 I have one, and 1931 I have two. For my 1933 coins: my Colombian one has a quite average mintage for that year; my Iraqi one was made in two different years, with 1933 being the higher mintage; and my one from New Zealand, made in four different years, has the second highest mintage. So maybe those countries were not that effected by the Great Depression? And the first link posted mentioned the Netherlands, but not their one cent coins (I have been putting together a date set of them). I knew none were minted from 1932 to 1936, but never considered that that was because of the Depression. Yay, I learned something! Look out for 1931 though; that is a rare one. Overall, my "rarest" years are 1935 and 1936, which I have no world coins from. I have two Canadian coins for the former and three for the latter, but of course, I have a Canadian cent and 5 cent piece for each year in the 1930s. That is why I tend to not count my home-country coins in things like these—date sets.
