Well, this is a repost of the coin I had snagged about a week ago...I got it in hand today. I know one of the issues of the other post was the bad seller pics. I have taken pictures and enhanced them here.

The coin has a plain edge.

Anyone care to take a stab at its date and variety? Also, how sure are you of the date (IE, if a TPG examines it, how likely are they to slab it with that date rather than return it as dateless?).

1796 S-87

I'm sure but whether you could convince a TPG is a whole other matter.

Here is how I arrived at the attribution.

Plain edge so it has to be 1795 or 96

On the Rev you can see MERICA, there are two leaf points below the A on point below the right foot and one below the left. None of the 1795 plain edge dies have that feature, so it has to be a 1796.

In 1796 there is only one die that has that feature and it comes on S-87, 88, and 89. (There are a couple outher dies that are similar, but they don't have the strong leaf point below the center of the R like this one does.)

On the obv although you can't make out what the digits of the date are you can tell where they are. On S-88 and 89 the 6 is right up against the base of the bust. On this coin and S-87 it is much lower with the date almost in a straight line. Also the wide spacing between the IB matches S-87. It is closer on S-88 and 89.

Conder, that's incredible that you came up with an attribution on a coin like that! Kudos to you.

Whoops. I guess I was wrong. Looking at the pictures again, I can see the date.
