I know strike strength might be a factor in the sharpness of devices, but what about thickness? My eyes might be seeing something that's not really there, admittedly. I've looked at a bunch of these lately. First pic looks thinner than the second to me.

There are many many dies that they use and the differences I would think are from the age of the die being used a new one compared to one that has already had half a million strikes with it.

I think the second pic shows a little more worn die.

It's not as crisp and creates effects with lighting that make it stand out.

Some very slight MD on the devices. altering the devices a bit. Also the duo lighting makes it look a bit different also. Note stronger light on the right of the devices. Secondary light on the left side of the devices. this creates false corners when the two lights fall over each other. Thus a one light source is better for close up images on devices.

Thanks everyone for the input. There is only one light source, however. It is coming from NNE. I didn't change the placement of the camera, I only switched the coin.

Maybe it's a window or light from another room another room, or TV, etc. Both pics show two light sources.

Try placing your hands around the coin and see what direction it is coming from. Then take a facial tissue and tape it so it block the light. That way every image will not have that issue again. I have two on my scope to prevent the unwanted light directions.

Coop would it be possible to snap a picture of your set up with the tissues? It would be very beneficial to myself and I'm sure others that run into this multi-directional light issue.

Well, you won't have to wait any longer CC. The first pic shows it best, notice how bright the devices are on the right side. They are lit from due east. They are lit from a less bright light from the west.
Now look at the second pic, notice the shadows, the predominate light is coming from the north.
A single light source is advantageous in macro cointography. Sorry, I just coined that word. When you look at a pic of a coin with raised and incused devices, the highlights and shades are reversed accordingly. Knowing that, even from a pic you can tell a Die Crack from a scratch, a chip from a gouge, etc. All you have to do is compare the lights and darks to those of a known device.
Knowing these things also aids in taking pics when you want to show something in particular. The lighting is as important as the camera itself. Without it, there would be no pics.
You've probably seen this before, but it highlights what I'm saying.
