Pretty sure on this one since the doubling occurs behind the mint mark, but I've never seen a confirmed one in person before, so checking with the experts here. After seeing hundreds of what I have termed pseudo-RPMMS on these coins (copper being scratched away on the strike revealing zinc to the bottom right of the mint mark which gets corroded, appearing like a repunch) I was excited when I spotted this sucker. http://crhfinds.blogspot.com/2008/0...ny-rpmm.html

I respect your wisdom in this area coop, but is it possible on this coin that the copper platting welled up inside the D when applied and covered up the inner portion on the secondary D? Though it's not obvious in the images, when I look at it under my loupe, the inside of the D is not flat but bowl shaped.

I'm going with "damage" or "MD" for now. I won't mind standing corrected.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. I wouldn't go Machine Doubling on this since I'm not seeing the same type of doubling within the curve of the D. I'd expect that much doubling to show up on the entire mint mark. I wouldn't say damage either since it's too clear. It's not the one that coop is showing either. That one is a very obvious coin when found.

Anyone else think my theory about the copper plating welling up inside the D and covering the other mark is plausible?

..also, does anyone have any example pictures for the 1985-1989 D series RPMMs? I tried Google and the only website that has anything for "D Penny RPMM" is my own blog. Nothing on ebay either.

For Lincoln Cent varieties you cant beat this site.. http://www.coppercoins.com/use the "die variety search" option and you will find what you are looking for in most cases. I use it a lot. Edited to add..In your internet searches use RPM not RPMM you will get better results.
