MikeF: its no good at all, need to mail it to me, I'll pay the postage....


That's one of the best I've seen, if you've snagged it, congrats. Don't really know how to grade, all I've seen are very worn specimens.looks like its seen some action, AU-55 or better. Very nice coin!

Trimes are really hard to differentiate between weakness of strike and wear.

This one is weakly struck - look at the reverse and notice how the diamond at 9 o'clock is filled in, but the six orbs and the two bars (near 12 and 6) aren't filled in very much. You also want to eyeball the ribbon holding the arrows:

But also notice that the top of the diamond has a tiny bit of wear on it. On a perfect full strike, the four sides of the diamond are RAZOR sharp and meet at a sharp point. Need an MS67, fully struck to see THAT, btw.

With a weak strike, when you look at the high points on the obverse, you need to be clearly thinking strike vs. wear. The key points are the 6 directional changes in the shield outline and the corresponding tips of the star.

Up-For-Grading---Trime

You will notice I highlighted three - those are clear and sharp. The three I didn't highlight are the ones that could be wear and could be weak strike.

Look at 10 o'clock and see how you have both of the lines of the star, it's just the inner line is weak? I'm calling that strike.

But look at the other two and see how the outline isn't present - that's wear. So I'm at a little better than XF45 over all and because the wear is so subtle, I'm also thinking AU53.

Bravo Bstrauss3! Thanks for the thorough analysis. I take it you're our resident trime expert. It doesn't seem like many follow the series on here.

The grade is au-55 by PCGS. I'm going to have to get a better magnifying glass when it arrives.
