This was in the collection I inherited and need some help IDing it and determining authenticity.

I did a little research and think that it is from the Satavahana period or before based on the symbols. The tricky part is that it appears to be copper and I'm reading that most coins pre-dating the Satavahanas were silver. I've included pics for size and weight reference. Thanks in advance!

Not my area of expertise, but I've never seen this in copper either. I've used the coinindia website at the recommendation of others here:

There has been a lot of research on Indian punched marks coins, but as far as pinning them down to a particular ruler that hasn't been figured. There is an excellent work in PDF for titled, "Catalogue of the coins of Ancient India by John Allan" It is available on the web for download. It is very useful with coins of the type.

Square punch-marked coppers weren't uncommon, it seems...at least based on the returns I see for "copper punch marked" at acsearch.info. I particularly see a lot from the "Eran" region. Unfortunately the symbols on the coin above are hard to read, and that will make attributing it challenging. I recommend doing the search I just mentioned to see if anything comes close.

I have a similar one; as far as I have seen, nobody knows who made them. They are usually described as "post-Maurya local".

Thanks everyone for the info. I looked at Spence's link and have downloaded the catalogue suggested by echizento to look through.

It is hard to see the symbols. The "sun" is pretty clear but beyond that, I don't know. It looks to be either 5 or 6 punches on the obverse and one on the back. I'll have to check acsearch.

It's already been through acetone and Verdi-Care (may have to double-up on that) so I think that's about as clear as it's going to get.
