1867-2017-10-Oz.-Confederation-Medals:-Juventas-Et-Patrius-Vigor

I haven't see a lot of talk about this coin but it seems quite popular with collectors on the other forum (I thought this was the "collectors" forum ).

The only review on the Mint's site right now is someone complaining that it sold out on day 1 and giving it a bad rating as a result - that is a separate problem but I digress.

So what do we think? Great coin? Too big? Timeless design? Double effigy great or too much?

The title of the coin makes me think it is the first of more to come Confederation medal reproductions. Maybe a gold version? Thoughts?

@CC-Ottawa,

Undoubtedly, Its a very nice looking coin. I considered buying it but I spent my money on other coins.

Yes, there is a lot of talk on the other forum but it is from the same 3 or 4 people who bought the coin.

The coin is first of 3 Confederation medals. So if you are buying all 3 of them you are paying $2700. A very hefty price.

When it comes to re-sale value, there is none because expensive coins of this type never do well on the secondary market. So unless you are buying it for your personal collection there is no point in flipping it. On ebay, Mario 95 is selling it for $999.95 or best offer.

Because it is such an expensive coin, only serious coin collectors or ones with deep pockets will buy it.

Also, for $900 it should come with a wooden box like the similar size 10 oz Vimy Ridge coin. Instead of a cheap maroon clamshell.

This why they have to charge so much for their coins.

The 10oz silver medallion / coin - could be said to be near high relief...and given the detailed image...it looks impressive.

BUT...its a reproduction...as are the rest of this 10 oz set, as is the 10 oz Vimy coin...as are the 1967 replica 5 oz set...and the Confederation Silver dollar...
- just about everything coming out of the mint is a replica of previous original artistic efforts to mark special anniversaries.

RCM is playing it far too safe...

What happened to originality, creativity...to mark these various huge milestones...

On VIMY -
This was a huge moment for Canada - most historians would unanimously confirm this point.

It was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force participated in a battle together - there were many casualties with the Canadians taking the strategic ridge from the Germans.
As a result, for a young nation, VIMY became the symbol of national identity and nationhood,
a symbol of Canadian national achievement and sacrifice.

This Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of VIMY - (known as Vimy Day) and the RCM marks the moment with two reproductions; one is the 10 oz copy of a painting and the other is the 1 oz Sacrifice Medal replica which has an image of the glorious VIMY Ridge memorial - (I'm told there will be another 1 oz coin to be released tomorrow as part of the WWI series)

What's missing is what we saw back in 1967, with Colville. Or, going further back...to the mid 1920s when the Vimy Ridge Memorial was conceived by the project designer Walter Seymour Allward -
The Vimy memorial took 11 years to see built and its truly spectacular.
Many would concur.

I'm not necessarily expecting that kind of dedication when it comes to marking these moments with a coin...but that type of spirit is completely missing thus far this year to mark the various special anniversaries...

The replica, copy, reproduction route...tells me that the RCM is simply opting for the familiar, foolproof approach...

Perhaps, the best is yet to come...?

I think the piece is very attractive - how could it not be considering the original source medal! - and well executed. I think the dual portraits on the obverse of the piece work well and make an effective 1867 vs. 2017 connection.

I also like the fact that the piece creates an opportunity for collectors to get access to a classic design originally used on an historic medal that is today difficult to find and acquire. I think exposing today's collectors to such pieces from the past can go a long way in developing in them a broader view of numismatics. For example, the piece may inspire some to learn more about medals and seek such pieces for their collection.

I do wish the RCM would have issued the coin at a price of $599.95 vs. $899.95 and increased the mintage to 1,500. It is very likely that the piece would still have sold out, but more collectors would have gotten the chance to acquire the piece and the RCM would still have generated the same top-line revenue.

In general, I agree with Electrum regarding the RCM's over-reliance on reissuing past designs - where are the modern interpretations of "classic" themes and symbols?

However, I don't put this $100 coin in the "overdone" category. I think this is an appropriate "re-issue" for the RCM for the reasons I stated above.

No doubt a 5 oz version at a more accessible price point would have sold out.yes.

I was thinking the 10-ounce version for $599.95.

After selling 5 coins when the limit is ONE, mario95coin has raised his price to $1149.95 and shipping to $24.99. This is a lesson on how to corner the market!

Mario95 changes the prices of his coins like a yo yo. Up and down, daily changes.

He had the Confederation coin at $1099, $1049, $999 and now $1149.

I'll bet he patiently waited for West Edmonton Coin to sell out and then raised his price again. Less competition.

Also, only 9 left at CC&C atm.

10 oz at 599.
They could have sold out with 5000 mintage given the beautiful design...and likely gained many new MC members

The Coin Show with Steve Bromberg tonight had the Confederation coins. It is a commissioned coin set. Steve Bromberg said he had a hand in bringing out this series so he had extra allocation. At last count, the TSC sold about 150 subscriptions.

Now we know the reason why the RCM sold out so fast. Canadian Coin and Currency had about 60 coins/subscriptions. Add up the 150+ sold on the TSC and that account for 200+ of the 1000 mintage.

Yes, we know all about his hands. They're all over the coins. lol

But seriously, I have to hand it to him (pardon the pun), S.Bromberg does a great job at some of these commissioned coins.

Thanks for the interesting info, MoneyPenney.

CC&C tried to sell the subscriptions first. I was told that no singles were available. Then the single coin became available for $100 over issue price. This is typical CC&C marketing with popular coins.
