I think that I am going to put some of BadThad's magic juice on it to see if it will help with the couple of small dark spots at the top of the obverse. Still Lookin

Have any of you guys ever heard of Mint Luster , Or some Mint luster remaining on an AU-53 Wheatie ? Yes there are brown AU's ,but IMHO they would have to look better than this coin . Not looking to thrash anyone's opinion on the grade of this coin as the grading of any coin is one man's opinion from another .

Well that's an interesting question, T-BOP. I have been trying to grapple with what different grades really amount to and what's considered modern versus antiquated. According to Wikipedia's entry on the Sheldon scale, AU50 is described thusly: "Traces of wear at the highest points of the coin. At least half of the original mint luster remains." And I'm still wondering if xf45+ is a legitimate grade. Can one offer an in between grade like xf48? I never seem to see anything like that but I don't see why not.

First and foremost I'm glad you have my back on this AU issue . I was at a coin show once ,a dealer had a coin displayed as an EF-48 and I've seen that grade on other coins also . As far as EF-45+ ,I used that myself many of times , dealers too .

Those other photos were taken with an old Nikon D90 with a macro lens. I changed the lens over to a new Nikon D810. I do not have a macro lens yet for the D810. I used a DX lens on an FX camera. I also moved the ISO to 12,800 and reduced the lighting. Below are new photos. There is actually a hint or red particularly around the rims. I am not sure what red has to do with anything. I have seen coins graded by PCGS as 65 BN. Still Lookin

Hahaha, the more I consider this, the more I feel like I don't know anything -- however, I'm glad to hear that I am not speaking Martian if I start putting out opinions like xf45+.
Still lookin, I'm envious of your coin and your photography equipment. I would really love to have some better tools to work with besides my phone and a cheapo macro lens. Anyhow, speaking to your point about MS Brown coins, I've been wondering about this for some time now and I hope someone can enlighten me. I feel like I conflate color with luster. For instance, when I look at your new pics, I'd call the color red brown. But thinking through the lens of luster, I'd see the red portions as what's left of mint luster. It still makes me want to say something like xf45+ -- more quotes from Wikipedia (for xf45): "Slight, overall wear is seen at the highest points of the coin (examples being raised features). All the details are full and very sharp. Mint luster may show only in protected areas of the coin's surface (Such as between the star points)."
Again, I feel like I'm lost, so thanks for letting me take out my disorientation on your coin!

I am not sure of the grade either. Just posting something to try to learn. If all of my Lincolns were at this grade level then I would be happy. I posted a ANACS graded 40 coin for sale this week on the bay and this cent is in much better shape than that coin. Still Lookin

Glad you're not offended. I'm definitely hoping to learn, too. Honestly it feels unintuitive or wrong to call this xf45. The eye appeal seems quite high. =)
