Cant remember the name, but isn't that where the die waa out of alignment and hit the collar? Didn't show the top portion but looks MAD?

Post a pix of upper portion and also reverse please.

I think the term you're looking for is "die attrition."

It's when the hammer die strikes the collar repeatedly and the die is worn away. This example looks to be that. In my thinking, a MAD left long enough will create die attrition.

thanks,after reading the definition of die attrition I think that spruett001 you're right, and it mainly happened on 1983 cents.

Have you tried a toothpick on it on that area? Sometimes there is a clear grease that looks like that on cents. that would be the first thing I would check for?
