It looks like a D to me.

If it is an S, then it is a proof and you can tell from the fields and rims.

A pic of the entire coin will get you more opinions about that.


As for the underweight coins....I just don't have a clue. Are they worn down?

I also see a D here, not an S. As far as the 10.9g halves, that's just above the bottom limit for mint tolerance (10.886g is their low point).
