I have been fishing through my change since as early as I have had change to fish through, but recently it seems everybody is at it whether they are into coins or not. Maybe because of the internet and articles appearing claiming about people getting rich from finding rare coins it seems like everyone is searching and hoarding because they think they can make money from it.

The bottom line is that I have not seen one Beatrix potter 50pence and none of the Shakespeare £2 coins. I don't really handle much change these days, its not like I work in a shop or handle the publics money as I used to.

So I bought a set off ebay, and now I wonder if it defeats the purpose? Can I justify paying over the odds since part of the joy of modern coins is knowing that they only cost you face value... and feeding those trying to profit on ebay only encourages them to hoard more....

Does anyone ever cheat and pay for the convenience or is it only fun if you find them in the wild? How long would a gap have to stay empty before you buy a coin to fill it?

I've found one Beatrix Potter 50p and no Shakespeare £2 coins, and I handle a lot of change.

Only part of the joy of modern coins is knowing that they cost you face value and since they came from your change they're not uncirculated. Some coins you'll never get in your change, therefore if you need to fill a gap, you will need to buy.

I've not listed any coins on ebay but I do hoard some low-value coins, not because I want to prevent them reaching other collectors but because I'm intending to do die comparisons.

PM me, though, if there's any coins you're particularly looking for.

For me, there's a much greater joy in identifying and grading coins, looking for varieties, finding out about their historical context and in the case of unusual designs, why they were designed and sharing with other people - there are two much older people who are very disabled to show them coins because they are fascinated that I visit often.

Yeah I kind of agree, modern coins are not something I want to get in the habit of buying... maybe I shouldn't worry about the gaps until at least a few years pass in order that I might fill them. Having seen how things went with the Olympic 50pence coins though I am sure lots of people just put them in jars never to see the light of day again.

Thanks for the offer to PM you, I was trading across to America trying to keep on top off the America the Beautiful Quarters and the Presidential dollars... another case of a mint producing so many varieties of coin its hard to fill a set by natural means. The postage is excessive though I think I need the last few coins in each series...

Here I have a few commemoratives that I can potentially trade but there is nothing I particularly need now I just cheated and bought the Beatrix coins.

I suppose it is good that they have done something to possibly get the youngsters interested in collecting, it is just a little more challenging that in once was from my point of view that everytime they release something everyone is all over it like a rash.

It's the thing that happens. The Royal Mint is interested in making money, so they want coins to be rare because then people are more likely to buy their overpriced sets. It's the collectors who suffer in a way, but at the same time rarity would seemingly make the hobby more interesting too.

I too have found none of these, but then they don't tend to circulate in China, no matter how many of them might be made here.
