Yep, when the dies wear, material on the die itself is forced outwards, this causes stretching of the letters towards the rim as you have. Here's an example of a VERY worn reverse die:

A lot of the wheat cents dies were over used. They used them past normal retirement. (especially on the 1950's dies)
