I found this coin and don't know what it is, it looks like an ancient coin, but I don't know what it is and if it's real.

Im having mods move you to ancients, give a better assessment. I do think it may be a copy, but let the big boys figure it out

Weird fantasy.

One side shows a quadriga (not sure which type it comes from) and "Athens" or "Athena" (I can't recognize the last letter) in modern Greek letters in the exergue (and an ancient Greek legend translating to "Year 14" near the top, apparently left over from whatever the original was), while the other side is a radiate of Postumus (a 3rd century Roman usurper).

Those sides really don't go together, whatever the first one may have been - to the extent that it doesn't really make much sense as a fantasy either.

Yeah, a documented Postumus fantasy.

I don't know anything about ancient coins, what is a fantasy coin? And does that mean it is a real ancient coin? Thanks.

Sorry, pf123. We mean it's a documented (on fake coins reports) modern fantasy creation. "Fantasy" because while it has the look and motifs of actual ancient coins, those elements are put together in ways or combinations that don't make numismatic sense. And sometimes, as here with the modern Greek letters, there are elements added that simply don't belong on an ancient coin.

Thanks, I got it at my local coin shop for 10 cents, so no big loss.

Are you?

I'm consistently impressed with the knowledge here and this is a wonderful example. Thank you everyone. I love seeing these mysteries solved!

@pf123, if you look closely at the top of your piece, I think that you will be able to see where the jewelry loop was ground off. At 10 cents, you don't have much investment in this piece and it is an interesting piece to have around, even though it doesn't have any value.
