I cam across this one it is 1974 P Quarter and I think the area between his neck and hair aren't laying right. It looks like the neck is much smaller than it is suppose to be. I looked through a lot of quarters comparing it but I am so new at this and maybe some others could tell me what they think and if it is a keeper. Thanks

Looks a wee bit off center and/or MAD.

Also, keep in mind that coin designs have been periodically updated/re-engraved. I don't know the years for Washington quarters but, that means you can't always compare old to new to find something unusual.

Compare it to a couple other 1994 quarters. While it is definitely slightly off center the rest of the design looks right to me.

Yes, it is slightly MAD. I came across a 1983 quarter yesterday. Most easily detected when you see what looks like a doubled rim or a very thick rim in one area and a very narrow or non existent rim in another area.

I went and compared to the rest of my 1994 quarters and this one was the only one looking like this one. Should I keep it?

You were asking about the gap between the back of the neck and the hair, correct? I don't have any expertise, but just wanted to clarify to see if those who do are commenting on your question and not the off-centered nature of the coin.

Yes you are right and the neck does look thinner, and the distance between the neck and ponytail is greater than normal. This is the result of overpolishing the die. As the field surface is ground away the devices get shallower, thinner, and the distances between design elements increases. It is not typically considered to be an error.

Oh well, thought I had something, I have so many coins I have been putting in jars until I may need some money, I would cash them in, so in that pile it will go. Thanks for all the expert advice. Great community with lots of info.
