My wife got this in change the other day. In hand the coin looks dark grey. I gave it an acetone bath thinking it could be just dirt. Well it didn't help. So I am thinking this could be toning. However the Obverse has straight lines going through the toning making me wonder. If it were an older coin I would almost call it a woodie.

The coin presents a MUCH darker grey in hand.

Is this toning, environmental damage, or something else?

Thanks again...Mont

I really don't know but the "toning" looks yellow, which would be normal for Jefferson nickels. Even though it's modern, I suppose it could still be a "woody" because the composition hasn't changed.

My hunch is this is some kind of toning, and wouldn't be suprised if thats all it turns out to be.

It was the parallel lines in it that made me question it. I have seen a few much older nickels that have planchet annealing issues look similar to this. I have never seen it in modern nickels though.

Looks like normal wear to me. What made you decide to dip it? It really isn't a high quality/rare issue....

So I took new pictures of this coin. Figured out it was my lighting casting a slight yellow color and had to clean the shade . This is more like what the coin looks in hand....well actually it is darker grey than it looks in pictures.

I think it is a Modern Jefferson Woodie as well.

Maybe a fake woodie with roller lines? I see that sometimes in early 1980s cents.

My vote is to put it in a flip and let time decide. This is the thing we do. I do not think it is unusual but time may think otherwise. I felt a 1972 penny in 1972 and told my mother that it felt "funny". Didn't keep it because a penny was really worth something back then. May have been a dd but who knows. I think what you see is PMD/wear but you may regret discarding it if some grading system finds an oddity a few years from now. It looks worn to me but for 5 Cents keep it and put it in a flip if you think otherwise. I put many dimes and pennies in flips just because they were slightly off center and still have many of them from the '80's. I am sure many experts here will say they are common but it only cost me a few cents to find out and I will still hold them.
