Just trying to begin navigating TPG options. Is there a substantial difference between the top 3 or 4, or does it really matter? Thanks, NHcoinster *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

As for top 3, I was told PCGS is the way to go. Many of the fake coins were in NGC holder and 2nd in standing, but I always liked ANACS. There was(is?) lots of politics/lawsuits for PCGS and ANACS. That's what I read. I was out of collecting for a while. I like to cheer for the underdog.
And finally, don't try 4th company, whomever they are. Just stick with top three.

I dont think there is a one answer for that question as it depends on the subject coin and your reasons for submitting it.

I have never submitted a coin but, from looking into it a while back, don't PCGS and NGC require a paid membership to have submission priveleges? I know there's the grading voucher thing. As far as I know, ANACS doesn't require anything other than submission fees. Not having several coins to submit, the membership fees were a hurdle for me so that made ANACS more appealing. However, it seems that PCGS slabbed coins (and maybe NGC) sell for more than ANACS slabbed coins. I'm at a little but of a loss but, fortunately, there's not anything I'm itching to submit.

In order: PCGS-NGC-ANACS. PCGS and NGC require being a member but you can submit through a coin dealer. PCGS if you want to sell it because they tend to get a bit more then NGC. ANACS if you are going to keep it for your own collection.IMHO. John1

I don't think there is any objective proof that "Many of the fake coins were in NGC holder". Repeating it multiple times does not make it true. Fact: The first discovered counterfeit slabs were PCGSs in the late 80s - that's why they added the ring and hologram to the reverse label. In fact, most of the counterfeit slabs I've seen reported are PCGS slabs. That's different than a counterfeit coin in a real slab, i.e. the TPG have slabbed a counterfeit coin. Over the years, there has been a constant battle between counterfeiters and the TPGs. As TPGs learn to detect better counterfeits, the counterfeiters get better at counterfeiting. They are all fierce competitors, claiming to be the best. At a technical, professional level, they are all professional numismatists and share information about counterfeits. As TPGs learn they've been fooled, they go back, check records and photographs and revoke certifications - ALWAYS check the web site. That's what differentiates the five majors (add SEGS into that mix) because you can check the cert# since they started slabbing. Each of the five have specializations, that is things they do uniquely.

PCGS and NGC are the top two. It's not clear if PCGS grades more rigorously than NGC as popularly believed, at least from what I've seen. In third place is ANACS, which is considered to have less consistent grading, and then maybe ICG. ANACS and ICG are good for authentication.

I think there's a reason why PCGS has become a stand-out. I recently submitted a couple of "signed" Bob Dylan LPs to PSA and thought it odd that the shipping address was essentially the same as PCGS. https://www.PCGS.com/News/PCGS-And-...-DestinationPCGS is working hard to corner the collectibles market. To me, that doesn't make them better at their job. If I submit any coin to be graded, I'll use ANACS. That whole paid membership thing is a no-go for me. That's fees on top of fees and I don't play that.

Quote: That whole paid membership thing is a no-go for me. That's fees on top of fees and I don't play that. None of them have a paid membership. PCGS you save money with the vouchers you get signing up for the platinum and using them on secure plus regular coins with the 8 vouchers. I would renew every submission if they allowed it. NGC give your equal credit for the fee. If you sign up in the right tiers and use the vouchers the right way none actually have a paid membership

I prefer NGC, with PCGS being second and ANACS third. I like that NGC photographs each coin (even though the photos aren't always great) But it helps to make sure it is the actual coin graded, and sometimes you see things in the NGC photos that the ebay seller pics don't show well. PCGS Secure is great because they photograph the coins really well, but regular PCGS slabs are not photographed.

I've only had interaction with NGC (reholdering mechanical errors, one being the wrong date on the label and the other being shipwreck coins developing a yellowing halo around the coin in the white holder piece) and they have been courtious and professional. A lot of my collection is world coins, and for whatever reason more NGC coins pop up in my searches than do PCGS. Over the last 4 years, for the slabbed world coins, it's about 15:3:1 NGC:PCGS:ANACS for my buying. Aesthetically, I like the white NGC slabs so it's ok with me, although a better edge view would be nice more of the time. ANACS has built a reputation as a go to for Morgans, especially for those when are into VAM varieties. I'm not crazy about their yellow label.
