Can you please run some of your diagnostic tests on this 1893 CC? It was given to me by a family member for my 8th birthday.

I downloaded paint.net as per your suggestion and it's helped me a great deal in providing the community with better pics.

Another member recently posted a 93 cc and the date position doesn't match my coin. When I first joined this community I was told the location of the date was suspect. So I looped around the city and visited 2 local coin shops and both told me it was genuine. Yet the position of the date does not match a recent post by another member.

Can you please take a look?

Fake

In that thread is a pointer to the VAM world site for 83CCs and there is a link there showing the two genuine mintmark locations: http://www.vamworld.com/1893-CC+Reverses, the Centered and Tilted.

Yours is not tilted but is too far right to be the centered (the edge of your 2nd C aligns with the left inside edge of the O in DOLLAR).

Yours looks like a genuine, but definitely a details coin.

The CC looks odd in the first reverse image but I think it's the camera angle/photo distortion. The detail is close to Fine but VG is likely more appropriate and with the harsh cleaning leaving it damaged I'd guess it's $150 coin as-is.

Quick and easy check: The date position on your coin is far (the left base of the 1 is above the left edge of the fourth denticle to the right of the bust)
The MM for this VAM (4) should have a slight left tilt; and a vertical line drawn connecting the top and bottom bars of the second C in CC, if extended downward, should approximately line up with the left inside curve of the O in DOLLAR.

Those appear to match your coin, which does appear to be a VAM-4. If the date is not excessively worn, you should see noticeable doubling on top of the 3 with a 10x glass, which is a confirmation of the variety.

VAM-4, by the way, is the only far date for 1893-CC. The other 4 VAM's will have the left edge of the 1 situated past the right of center over the 3rd denticle right of the bust point.

MikeF,

Your comparison images between the different coins with the lines showing the "different" positioning are of no practical use because the coins are not pictured at the same angle (in the case of the reverse) and in the case of the obverse, though both are shot straight on the rotation of the two coins are different. This would make the line positions different even if the images were of the same coin.

It is a shame that to get a nice example of a 93-CC you must pay a small fortune. Even worse with the 89-CC. Even a "details" 93-CC has value. If you got it for free then it is all good.
