Although I personally never had a Customs issue getting my coins back from a US TPG , heard a beauty from a good client friend on Vancouver Island. CBSA actually seized his OWN coins sent to NGC for certification when they were returned to Canada from Florida . He eventually had to get a broker to get them returned and was assessed a penalty as well!! Never heard of such nonsense. Any one else had issues getting their coins sent in for Certification at PCGS NGC or ANACS?

What was the CBSA reasoning for holding the shipment?

Who knows? They seem to make up the rules as they go along!

Never had a problem, but I'll be receiving a package from NGC in a few weeks so who knows?

ok so to circumvent this issue, couldn't you have the TPG just ship the coins back to a third party warehouse across the border (there are tons of these services) the cost is usually about $3. Since this is your coin and it is a Canadian coin why would you need to declare it?

You need to document the coins are yours before leaving Canada or some highly CBSA agent would say the whole shipment is subject to HST or whatever taxes is owed, when at most only the grading fee is subject to tax but there are also problems if the coins are subject to a commercial class, another story. A third party mailbox you still have to cross the border at sometime

CBSA is really getting on my nerves. I had a package held up there for around three months (just over 12 weeks) a little while back. They also randomly stab holes into packages and letters and have a look at what's inside, and often don't patch the hole up. Worst of all, rumor has it that calling the CBSA to complain will land you on a list of "extra scrutiny" in the future.

I've had that with notes before. They wanted proof that I had originally purchased them. I had to get the TPG to write a letter attesting that they infact received the notes to be certified and that they were getting returned. Luckily with notes there's serial numbers etc

Never had a problem. Either shipping to US address and bringing across in person commercial or direct ship to me. At worst only the fees are subject to HST.

if you grind out the paperwork, eg export declaration....there usuallly is no problem. I suspect we aren't hearing the whole story.
