What do you think of this one?Don't tell me it's a scratch you would be wrong saying that I have verify under microscope and it those come from the Die or something. Edited by andre1621 04/11/2008 3:55 pm

Andre, that's another interesting coin! I'll have to think about this one...perhaps it was a piece of metal that was struck into the coin and later fell out?

Why couldn't it be post mint damage?

I'm not saying it can't be PMD, it's hard to tell from pics alone. And that might be all it is. Still, there's a very clean transition between these cavities and the fields. I don't see metal moved around, which may suggest either there were cavities in the planchet or something fell out after the strike. Btw, that 1974 1c has since been determined to be struck on a defective planchet.

Hi Kurt You are right, this was cause when the coin was struck by the die a residue of metal may have been on the die while it was made.I remember finding one like this one once the damage was more on the detail of the coin and in the cavity you could see the detail of the bird very clearly, same thing here you can see detail of the beads close to the rim.

Andre1621, That looks just like a cent, (US), that I have. It is a "struck-thru", and apparently was some bits of wire that were on the die when the "hammer" fell. P.S. Anfre, It took a while but here it is: It is that "trough" at the base of the bust. Dick

I have a similar coin in a 1995 specimen set at work, but the wire is still stuck in the coin and there is some pitting on the maple leaf, will see if I can get a pic of it today.
