I'm sorry if this has been asked many times before but I have several 1965 cents and was wondering how to tell the difference in the bead varieties. If I post pictures is it something people here can help me identify or is it something you need a microscope for?

Hi, here's the areas on the 1965 1c to tell between varieties. If you also post pics I'll be happy to help!

Here is the diagnostic for the 1965 "large beads, pointed 5". Not the tiny protrusion on the end of the "pointed 5": there's a die chip.

I've just started to get serious about Canadian coins. I'm not really sure what I'm looking at, so if you could take a look at the pictures and give me a hand that would be wonderful!

Hmm...it's a little hard to tell from the pics. I do know how challenging macros can be...I've struggled with it for years.
I can't say either way on the first 3, but I think the last coin is "large beads" and the top stroke of the 5 looks promising too! How does this 5 compare to the diagnostic I posted above? If the 5 stroke comes to a point that nearly touches the maple branch, then maybe you found one!

I've compared them side by side and the first three are all blunt. I still don't know about the bead size though. I can see a point on the last one. However, you can't tell from the scans but this coin was harshly cleaned by me before I knew any better.

Ok I have another question, this time on nickels. On the 1942 how do you tell the difference between nickel and tombac?

P.S. Kurt, you collect pre-50 Canadians right?

Arthrene-
The Tombac is easy...it has a deep brassy color.
And yes--I collect the pre-50s mostly, plus a few later ones that get my attention.

I really like the reverse on the Canadian 50 cents. Very beautiful. My grandfather has accumulated many foreign coins over time but has never had an interest in them. When I started to collect, he passed them on to me. Included was a 1943 50 cents. The reverse is toned blue and purple. I love it!
Thanks for all the help Kurt. Once I'm done going through all these I'll let you know if I have anything pre-50 to see if you're interested in a trade.
