Hi, so the grade would not be better than G4 (does it even warrant G4? But the colors are so beautiful! According to my 2011 Official Red Book, G4 could get me 3$ for this (in 2011...). The colors on it are so great, though. How much should I expect to get, at worst or at best?

It was really hard to take proper photos. These were taken with my back to a sunny window, without flash or digital enhancements.

I'll say it just makes VG-8 by a hair . I'm confused about the color of this worn IHC .

Just a cull - damaged, scrubbed at some point, and essentially worthless.

Can't say how it got this way. It was in part of a box of 15$ of loose and rolled Canadian and American pennies for most of the last 20 years. So essentially, in Grade VS Tone, if I understand correctly, is that the grade will guide the value, and the tone will only just make it more desirable to some?

Thanks!

Some collectors like toned coins, but in the IHC series, a toned coin that is less than uncirculated is most likely cleaned and altered in some way. I see a common date in heavily circulated condition, that at some point was heavily cleaned. Not much of a market to sell it in my opinion.

I've seen worse culls as well, but sadly that's all this is - a hole filler.

Coinfrog, to say a coin is a cull I would think this is based on your opinion. Is there a true definition of a cull coin?
When new members or old members post a coin. They are sharing what they have. Lets share this and thank them.
There a number of post from new members that show low graded/damaged
coins. Lets not discourage then from learning.
These coins may be the only ones in the budget and a great learning adventure.

No intent to disparage anyone, believe me.

The question posed in this thread's header includes..."Value?".

I'm simply saying the coin is so defaced as to have no effective value - ungradable (a details coin) and therefore, as a well worn common date, basically worthless (a cull).

If you define cull differently, fine.

I hope the poster likes it, that's great. He/she asked, and I replied.

VG Details, cleaned, artificial color

It's worth a few cents, that's about all.

I understand where all of you come from. But is it really impossible that this coin got this tone naturally? I mean my great aunt had probably
this in a box of loose+rolls mix pennies (I kid you not, at least 15$ worth) probably for 20 years. Then I got this same box 20 years ago and opened it this week. So essentially, the coins have been sitting there for maybe 40 years... You're telling me you think someone, maybe more than 30 years ago took the time to pick this damaged penny up, clean it, "color it" or whatever and then just throw it back in a pack of loose change for someone else to pick it up? I tell ya, my great aunt was not a very savvy collector (she has mostly lots of circulated coins). Maybe I'm too new at this but it's just a bit cynical, no? I thought it looked old, put it aside and then I saw all the colors on it and thought that they are very pretty and cool. I thought they might make the coin "valuable" or desirable when the condition did not. I'm glad I now know it doesn't hold "numismatic value" and that condition will always trump tone. I wasn't sure before. Still learning. Thanks for your input guys! I'm going to keep it, even though it's not in good condition, because it's still very unique on its own.

I'm new at this too. My guess--and it's just that--is that whatever this was cleaned with may have developed the color. So any artificial color was a side effect rather than the intent at the time. .
