This is one of the best examples I have found to keep around for what I have found on probably 60-70% of 1999 P nickels. It's like philly took all of the worn out dies and used them to strike another million coins from each . This one was bad enough I could see something was different before I looked at it through my loupe.

Actually we are looking at MD on both sides of the coin. Also the die is showing heavy die flow on the fields so the die is in the VLDS. If the die was polished, the fields would not show the die flow issue.

Very astute of you to notice the 1999-P scenario, PBP. I have wondered if anyone else noticed it. It is the year/mint more nickels have MD than any other. I'm sure we know the Strike Doubling is very often on both sides too. with your percentage estimate also.

Crazybo I like the double chin as well , we look like twins. Coop the die flow is so heavy that god looks elevated above the fields (which is how I think the Bible said it was to be lol) The flow is larger and as thick as the devices. Coinmasters I noticed this a while back. It's to the point I hardly look at the 99s because it's almost painful to see how horrible they are, it wouldn't matter if there was a double die for that year, you would never be able to identify it.

It does make finding a DDO more difficult; finding a 2000 DDO has proven to be a challenge for that reason.

Racketer I haven't looked at any 2000s yet but if they are anything like the 99s good luck finding anything but md and vlds dies, and once you get past that then you have to deal with PMD from coin rolling equipment .

I've pulled a few that have promise and set them aside for further analysis and confirmation. The ratio of possible vs VLDS specimens is still very low. To be honest, if there weren't photos to judge against, I feel your comments are correct; truly tough to call it a DDO. I see 2002 and 2003 specimens that look like the 2000 variety. I set a few of those aside too for further study...and hoping to see something pop up at Brian's site.

Good luck on the hunt!
