I found a little info about what causes this type of error but from what I've#8203; read this only happens with coin years 1982 to the present. If that's the case how do we explain this coin? Thanks for the input, Jon

Well, it's not plating blisters -- wrong year for that.

Sometimes coins get these stripes from being in coin folders. The glue behind the paper backing discolors the coin. But that would mean that the coin was put into a slot with the date facing inward -- highly unlikely.

How does the reverse look?

Good One Rackster

However, I believe these are just roller lines (rollers reduce the coin material to its proper thickness) If they are not kept clean then they can transfer the dirt on the planchet. I must say I though I haven't seem them going in the direction that you LC is displaying.

Maybe something else?

I'll second the roller line explanation. I see a lot of this in the early 1980s copper cents as well. Sometimes it's not as prominent as the coin you have though. It's a modern fake woody.

I'll third the roller lines. Of course, it can't be plating and it is way too regular to be a woody (annealing error).

Edit: I suppose it could have been transferred from something else after being put in circulation or covered with something that affected the color as it aged. I have no idea what.

Hi, I have a similar 1980 cent, I am also having difficulty finding out exactly what it is and if it's worth anything.

Smurfy - yours looks like roller lines as well. On the reverse you have some PMD long scratch and a deeper indentation on the lower right of the memorial.

Here is link that is really helpful in determining if you get one that would considered a Woodie or possible Lamination. Laminations and Woodies both stem from the same problem "Improper alloy" copper mix.
