I am assisting a friend in selling off his collection. Among the more valuable pieces was this 1882 Bank of Quincy $20 Value back National Bank Note. I am not too experienced in paper money, especially of this age. From the research I have done it seems the value back is scarcer than the sate back variety. There are some heavy creases but no rips or tears. At a show a dealer appraised this piece at $600-$650. Does this seem right? What grade is it and Should I get it graded? Any info is much appreciated.

Not a "rare" note, but still nice! The heavy folds definitely hurt it grade-wise. From what I can see I'd say it is probably in the fine to very fine range.

Heritage Auctions has a pretty good history of selling quite a few notes from the Ricker bank of Quincy. I think the appraisal of 600 to 650 is probably pretty much on target for this note.

Nice note - too bad for the pronounced creases. I found that appraisals from auction houses are a little high because of the buyers premium and S&H may keep the bids a bit lower. And because of the condition a higher end buyer will be able to afford a nicer note and probably one that is graded.

The Value Backs were the last type of Series 1882 issued to banks from 1916 to 1922.

The Ricker National Bank of Quincy issued all three types of Series 1882 notes.

with westernsky on the value.

Series 1882 notes come under the heading of Second Charter Period from July 1882 to April 1902.

Brown Backs are the earliest from 1882 to 1908

Date Backs make up the middle from 1908 to 1916

Value Backs from 1916 to 1922

Scarce type, possibly low VF despite folds because paper looks strong and corners are decent. I think $600+ sounds about right.
