Can you get a picture of the full reverse and the edge? If you can't focus on the edge, just let us know if the reeding is intact.

If the reverse is normal, it's a Misaligned Die error with partial loss of devices. Very nice!

The reverse is normal. It's a Misaligned Die error with partial loss of devices.

Cool! It's a nice one. Misaligned Die errors are common. Misaligned Die errors missing part of the rim are less common. When they're so misaligned that the devices start falling over the edge (like the 198 in the date) they are uncommon. Enjoy it. I have to sign off now. ltr

They all look like that, that year. It was an issue with a swelling master hub. They replaced the master hub the next year and and fixed the issue.

Through the years the tops of the devices were moving towards the edge of the die. Note the progression on the images above.
The old and new quarters side by side.

They all had the issue in 1982. A miss aligned hub was not the issue this year.
