I placed a first time order for some bullion with APMEX - standard shipping (first class, insured) It looks like it left their warehouse and the Oklahoma City USPS facility on 4/14 with an expected delivery date of 4/17 (yesterday). Yesterday's mail came and no buillion. Today's mail came and nothing. Tracking shows "In transit to destination" since 4/16.

Is this normal? How long should I wait until I contact APMEX?

Once it's in the hands of USPS and departed the original location, APMEX probably can't help you. I'd give it another couple of days before I'd really start worrying -- I've had packages held up for up to a week, for no apparent reason.

I had a 1/10 ounce gold eagle lost in the mail that I bought from a major PM company. I had to wait for around two weeks but they finally mailed me a brand new one to replace the one that was lost. I would call them if you don't receive it or see any movement in the tracking by the weekend. I really feel like APMEX will make it good if you never receive it. Those guys have insurance against these types of things.

I will speculate that it comes Wednesday. Perhaps the Easter weekend caused some delays.

Yes, it's completely normal. "In Transit to Destination" can be one day or one week depending on where you live. It did not leave APMEX's home location (Oklahoma City) until late Thursday night (essentially Friday) and USPS is closed on Sundays.

I would not contact APMEX until Friday. Your purchase is insured for 100% of the purchase price regardless. No worries.

P.S. I have waited for two weeks to get USPS First Class mail across the lower 48 when it gets hung up in the system.

I order from Provident Metals, it sometimes takes two to three weeks for delivery. I figure, what's the hurry?

Last year I got a 1966 $100 bill on ebay and a few days later usps showed it as delivered, but I did not get it until 2 days later. I was sweating on that one.
