This is a lamination error. Piece of the die peeled up but didn't quite fall off, therefor leaving a mark on the coin.

Could be a lamination but looks to me like a broken die.

Thanks for looking Roy and your response. I am not seeing a LAM, at least none that I have seen like this. But you never know, and I am always learning something new each day.

Usually this type of crack occurs when the die breaks in several areas and the copper pretty much goes where it wants to. I believe it was (not able to tell now) a double spike head but with the damage to the D in GOD and the close proximity of the W to the rim due to wear makes it pretty much impossible to declare as spike heads

Wow Doug, Thanks. I never even would have thought of a Retained Cud. This would be my first - It looks really close so far, so I am going to check out the details.

Thank you very much

I wonder if Chuck is one our family members.

You are toooo kind CM - you put in everything I like. I think you forget the kitchen sink though.

Here is another image. There are some slight differences so whether it is from wear or die stage I don't know. Need you all for that.

Now I am really thrilled

I guess that was because I clicked it in the quote. I clicked it in Halo's reply and it looks like 15 with a later die stage and wear on your coin.
Maybe you could do a side x side.

How is this

1955-Wheatie-Cracked-Skull---Updated---It's-A-Retained-Cud-:-!!

edit: It's not actually as ugly as it looks, using the USB camera really makes it look pretty nasty. It has some really nice luster to it and it is Red/Brn - the mushy devices from die wear doesn't help it .

Nice find. I might have disregarded that coin as a very worn die. You have a good eye. The 1955 LWCs are interesting coins.

Thanks scurry. I love searching the 55's probably like most of us. I usually wait until I get a bunch and go through them all at once. Makes it easier to spot the variety or errors that way.
