PCGS Genuine Certification And Counterfeit Slabs

Hello,

I have a question about PCGS slabbed coin. I've been reading that counterfeiter in these days might slab fake coins and copy certification number on the label. If this is the case, then how can you be sure the coin is genuine? If you look up the number, then it gives you proper info.

Just to be clear, I am NOT stating above coin is a counterfeit, but how can I be sure before someone puts down $450 for it.

The PCGS serial number indicates that they felt that this coin has altered surfaces. I do not know the series well enough to tell you if its fake, but the slab looks ok.

In response to slab counterfeiters, PCGS has developed secure slabs that have hidden security features that authenticate the coin, in addition to grading. If you are unsure of the slab's authenticity, buy the secure slabs and then authenticate these with PCGS.

Definitely over-priced. The coin looks cleaned with no luster. I guess that's why there is no grade by PCGS.

I'm going with the slab (and coin) being legit.
That being the case I see it worth half of the $450 asking price.
The $450 price is for a coin in that grade with original surfaces.
I'm saying 50% because the coin is a semi-key.

Semi key? I thought 1860-O is one of the highest mintage Seated dollars.

The 60-o is NOT semi-key date and is one of the most common slds. I agree you can do much better than that for $450. It looks like it's in vg-10 to f-12 shape before the details designation. I highly doubt it's a fake slab given the seller's history. Since he accepts them make an offer for $100. It he doesn't accept no worries.

Not a very attractive example. Keep searching.
