Does Anyone Else Own Any Early ANACS Graded Coins With Certificates.

TNG Bedrock of the Community United States 10284 Posts	Posted 04/19/2017 11:11 pm In the days of old when coins were not slabbed, they came back with a photo certificate with the grade and a number. A bar code on a 2x2 and on the back of the certificate and a pink insert in the 2x2 with a disclaimer on the holder and a matching barcode. Those were the scary days of PVC. I have several key dated coins like this. When I enter the certification number nothing is found on the ANACS page. Does anyone else have any of these? I was also thinking that back in 1983 when these were sent in, the grading standards were a bit more strict. I could be wrong about that. Here's a 1909 S Lincoln in VG8/VG8 when they graded both obverse and reverse.. I blacked out the number and my name and the date submitted for my own personal reasons. The Registration number is something like F 5655 D for example. Not the right one of course. The one I enter with or without spaces does not show up for any of these early ANACS graded coins. Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 04/20/2017 12:32 pm ANACS has been through several owners and many of the early serial numbers didn't make it into the database. Yes, I have a fair number of the certificates. Your certificate is listed in the book as either ANACS 5 which was only used in 1983. And none of the certificates ever had a barcode on them. Barcodes didn't appear until the third generation of ANACS slab. What I want to see is an ANACS certificate that dates before 1975. ANACS began operation in 1972 but I have never seen a certificate from before 1975. I have to wonder it there might be a very early variety that I have never seen. Report this Post to the Staff

The 2x2 that they sent the coin back with does with the matching registration number ( which I blacked out ) This one matches the number on the cert. very interesting that they go back to 1972. HOWEVER, the original ledgers exist at the ANA Museum and can be looked up and the page photocopied for a fee. The original negatives are also in storage. But, the later photo certs were not in the ledgers, only in a database that was stored on Zip disks and they were unable to extract the data when they started with the small white holders. The break point is something like E-xxxx-D or so... I'd have to look it up. Andrew99 CCF Advertiser United States 1533 Posts	Posted 04/29/2017 3:40 pm I have a bunch of these ANACS certificates. The grading was way stricter back then so I think the certs have no value as I would gain 1-2 points on every mint state coin by slabbing them. Report this Post to the Staff
