I'm new to coin collecting and I'm interested in purchase a tyre shekel (30 Pieces of silver). I'm interested in this coin. I'm wondering if from the pictures you can help me identify if it's real and what year it was made. Thanks. Paul *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Well first if you are open to looking some more you can do much better then dealing with a tourist place in Israel. They have to get a decent markup and you will be paying them like 2 grand. There are plenty of great coins you don't have to worry about that are NGC graded already. So there is a record. And you will pay much less for the same quality. Example from a past sale, not mine.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AR-Shekel-P...047675.l2557Or if you want to see one for sale now, not mine, here is one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Phoenicia-T...AOSw3utY8TnVHe does not have make an offer but at that price they take offers. Look for NGC and long established feedback.

From the pictures it just doesn't look right, if you can provide better pictures it might help. The detail on the reverse looks sloppy and the legend appears to be broken in spots.

This coin series especially trades like silver bullion. So much so you can see what they go for based on grade really simply. I bought one from David Hendin when I was making an album for someone with Christian religious coins but I also have watched hundreds trade. They were not at all uncommon as the temple allowed them so they were important. And pretty much ancient coins of this size had a really great chance of getting to recent times. So you can always get yourself any level of an Owl Tetradrachm or you can always get yourself a decent Tyre Shekel. Now if you are not into the looks so much and just want a coin that could have been paid to Judas, less of a collector and more for the religious significance, you can go lower in quality and just barely see the letters for Tyre and the eagle. Anything from perfect to that level is available. Looking at the site in Israel you link to, Zaks, those other holyland coins are way high priced. The regular bronze prutah's they have up. If you are ever unsure about a potential purchase just send the link in to the coin you are looking at and I can let you know if the dealer is great, we all know of each other. In the meantime, put a watch on this coin below and then do watches for others. Below is a live auction from a seller with 200,000 sales at $500 already and a decent NGC coin. Then watch lots of other Tyre shekels sell. Become an expert in the coin before series you buy it. Then you can really bargain. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PHOENCIA-TY...AOSwB-1Y8OtoAlso, you can use munzeo for any ancient sold anywhere in the last decade. Here is a munzeo search for Tyre shekel: http://munzeo.com/tyre-shekel/sort-0

Thanks for the links. This is really fun. I'm really looking for a tyre shekel, but I want the back side to be in decent enough shape to see the date, the eagle and the surrounding legend. So I know I'm gonna spend some money, I just want to find a pretty good deal. I'm sure I'll end up buying more than one over time. I want the coin to be authentic, but I don't want it slabbed because I want to hold it and teach my children about it. I will continue to look and I'm planning on going to a coin show in the Los Angeles are in June. So this is just the beginning..

louisvillekyshop...Thanks for the links. I thought an original, authentic shekel weighed around 14.00 grams. I noticed one of the ones you said was really ancient and real for sale for $750 weighs only 12.84. I thought that was a sign of a fake shekel... it was this one... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tyre-Shekel...AOSwj25Y8NuwI'm just wondering...

Here is one CNG sold in February for $700. And it weighed 12.26 grams. The coins do wear down. About the coin in Israel you cited from what I posted, he does show it is from the Kenneth Miller Collection of Ake-Ptolemaïs. The way the guy priced it he seems to be trying to get back close to what he has in it. So ask to see documentation and if he does not have it anymore you might ask for a better price if you were interested. http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotvi...96d82aac475dLooking over the rest of his coins, that guy in Israel who I don't know, he seems to be selling off some classic holyland coins at fair prices. If I bought that tribute penny of his that is about what I'd get fro selling it in the condition it is in. Very fair for the Athens tetradrachm, but not great quality. Just a classic collector trying to get his money back in my opinion. http://www.ebay.com/sch/polikarpovy...047675.l2562

Thanks for all your help...This is very fun...
I was intersted in some coins someone was trying to sell, but since I"m new and I haven't posted like 50 times I can't reply. Is there anyway around this. Or do I need to start commenting on a bunch of forums...Ha Ha

There is no way around it, other than to follow the rules of the forum. Commenting on a bunch of forums to boost your post count is frowned upon. If they are quality replies and not all "nice coin" than that's OK.
