So I was shopping online a few days ago and I stumbled across this denarius of Titus. After consulting with a an expert in Flavian denarii I bought the coin. It is interesting for many reasons. First, while I do have a Titus denarius for my 12 Caesars set, it is Titus as Caesar and and as Augustus. Not only is this one of Titus as Augustus it was minted in the first week of his reign (from June 24th AD 79). It is Titus RIC 1. Another reason the coin is interesting is that it is a Judea Capta issue. The reverse features a Jewish captive under a trophy. I know the coin is worn but I had to have it for its historical significance. It will make a nice addition to my 12 Caesars.

Titus AR Denarius 79 AD Rome,
Judaea Capta issue.
(3.12 gram, 18 mm).
Obv: IMP T CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, Laureate head right) TR POT VIII COS VII Rev: Captive kneeling right before trophy.
RIC 1

A very special coin, Andrew, imbued with significant history. Congrats. With all the upgrades/duplicate emperors, your 12 Caesars must be, like, 20 Caesars at this point.

Thanks Bob. I always appreciate your comments. My 12 Caesars is at 18 at the moment with my duplicates. This is after I got rid of several that I replaced with upgrades.

Very interesting coin indeed, especially from being struck during his first week as emperor. Congrats.

I'm with Ron on this one. Being able to date your Roman coin to the correct week is amazing. Congrats on the pick-up!

Thanks Bob, I am trying to be very selective regarding the coins I want to add. Number 18 is on its way from London. It is the Egyptian tetradrachm of Vespasian that I posted a little while ago. It is the Dattari collection plate coin.

Here is a thought for you folks: The famous Vespasian coin below, from a USC edu website so not mine. Couple of thoughts about it as we are on Vespasian Capta coins.

1. Rome is happy Jerusalem is emptied of Jews and has the Judea Capta series where Judea "sits on the ground, after 70 AD.

2. 700 years before Isaiah predicts the fall of Jerusalem where he famously says: "Your men will fall by the sword and your mighty ones in battle. And her gates will lament and mourn, and deserted she will sit on the ground."

Anyone here think Isaiah dreamed of a Jerusalem empty of Jews and soldiers with this coin all over the place shining brightly just struck in the sun with this image of Judea sitting on the ground?

And before you shoot it down, if you are not religious that is fine, maybe no such thing as Prophets, but if you are religious, can you really say you know what a Prophet sees in a vision? Maybe he sees a city empty of Jews and this coin sticks as an image in his head so he write Judea will "sit on the ground"?

Now here is the way to get yourself a great Judea Capta coin at a good price.
NN is a good auction house. Look at this listing below. If you could get this group lot for a good price and sell all but one of the Capta denarius coins, including selling the augustus denarius of course, you'd probably get yourself a nice coin.
