Ok, I just got off the phone with APMEX and asked them the following question: Does APMEX TEST the gold and silver they have, whether its a buyback from customers or from other sources.

They answered in such vague terms and did not answer the question directly. That gets me concerned only because I am in the market for unslabbed fractional gold bullion and raw Pre-1933 gold coins, but of course I am concerned about counterfeits.

Am I over reacting with this or should I not be to concerned since its a well known bullion dealer? I have decided to stay away from my LCS and e-bay for these purchases. Interested in all comments.

Ya know, I never asked them that question. But their 'vague' answer is a red flag.

The answer should have been known and precise. Professional.

It disturbs me that they didn't have a pre-scripted answer. Or maybe they did...

True, but what is everyone's feeling about trusting APMEX Provident Metals JM Bullion for authentic gold bars and coins?

I personally have never had an issue with any listed above. I have bought silver and gold from all of them over the years.

I think it would good for any or all of them to answer your question on this forum. I know JM Metals and others post here looking for business and are advertisers.

I wouldn't expect any of them to respond to this random thread.

I think there's virtually no doubt that they test what they buy. They'd be just plain dumb not to. They have the scan guns, so why wouldn't they use them? If someone was to get a fake from them, then it would almost certainly have to be intentional. That would be a crime and I've seen no evidence that they're intentionally selling fakes, so I'll continue to trust the major dealers. Their reputations are far more important to their long term business prospects than pulling one over on someone every once in a while. All that said, it was for them not to have ready answer.

BTW, I sold a couple of Valcambi 1oz gold bars to Gainesville coins a couple of years ago. I assumed that the serialized packaging would be enough for them. Nope. They buyer pulled out the scan gun just to make sure. It actually made me feel good that they verified them.

^^^Agreed. I'm sure they test what they are buying being that they buy alot. I dont think they are going to blindly buy especially if its Gold unslabbed and at bulk, Even at 1oz coin.
I think they just got offended and just threw up a vague answer even tho there is no doubt they should have answered in a professional manner when dealing with metals. On that note I'm going to test my metals now....lol.
