Just scrolling through Morgan dollars as I'm looking to buy some, and came across this which is up to nearly $1500, and its grade is AG03. I know its a low mintage coin, but please could someone tell me why it is fetching so much? I may be missing something obvious here, but the NGC catalogues this coin at about $170?

Toby you linked an 1893-P from NGC and an 1893-S from ebay.. The 1893-S is a rare Morgan bringing top dollar in any grade..

How embarrassing , thanks for the reply.

I'm looking now at the correct page.

I'm interested to see how much it fetches now against the price guide of $2400

Don't be embarrassed at all. It's really easy to get mintmarks mixed up and/or overlooked so always ask a question if you are unsure of something.

Also the denotation for silver dollars is even more confusing as the 1893 (or any) Philly issue is often written as: 1893 S$1.

Thanks, yeah that's what confused me I just realised. When you search it on NGC, the top link comes up as 1893 S$1, so I presumed that was the San Francisco coin.

Well, NGC makes mistakes too, and I am sure this contributed to your confusion.

This is from NGC's 1893 (P) page (your second link):

Personally, I think the coin grades G-04. Bet anything it'll be cracked.

Not a great looking coin, regardless of whether it's an 1893-S.

That is a silly comment, it actually is a very nice looking circulated coin for the expected grade levels.

I think it looks really good for the grade. Have seen much much worse at that level.

IMHO, this 1893-S is a textbook G-4 and PQ for that grade. It's a perfect hole-filler!
