An-Obscure-Identification

An-Obscure-Identification

Without any "coat of arms" or other graphics, all I really had to go on was the 1308 date (corresponding to 1890/1), and I wasn't seeing a match amongst any of the Arab kingdoms I could think of. Finally I was able to determine that it was a 5 centimes of Sultan Said Ali bin Said Omar, who "ruled" the island of Ngazidja as a French Protectorate.

Despite the date, it turns out this specimen came from a 1901 restrike. It still proclaims Said Ali as Sultan when in fact he'd been banished to Reunion Island 9 years earlier.

Nice work @LC. I agree that short of learning Arabic, using the numerals in the date can be a useful starting point. Of course in the early days of Islam, the date was often spelled out in words...
