You can't really see it (unfortunately) but his lips even looked puckered. I have tried to mess with the lighting but just can't seem to capture it.

That depends 600,000 - 950,000 strikes at 223 standard tons. I think he's faired quite well here. Wait until it approaches or surpasses 1,000,000+ mark. Thanks, Doug.

Edit: scratched out above tonnage reference and corrected in a later response.

Sorry I think I supplied the wrong info above. The 223 tons applied to Hub and Die creation, not coins.

Sure hasn't made him look any "prettier"!

Shouldn't besmirch him, he's one of the three collection I have completed!

I had no idea that it was that amount of pressure - he is doing well then - he still has hair.

@ Crazyb - Congrats on those completed collections - I'm still working on my LC's.

@Sandy. Sorry I think I supplied the wrong info above. The 223 tons applied to Hub and Die creation, not coins.

Thinking now coins require a little less pressure, say around 60 tons give or take pending material, size and or denomination being produced. Thanks, Doug.

Thanks Doug - Great stuff.

I thought this was a great analogy.

the force to strike a nickel as equivalent to the impact of 3 high-speed trains, the weight of 16 elephants or the combined bite strength of 157 great white sharks. You don't really see much. The pressing action is blazing fast with up to 750 coins struck every minute.

A planchet is fed between the two and the press applies tons of pressure to transfer the designs.

35 tons for cents and dimes
50 tons for nickels
60 tons for quarters
120 tons for half-dollars
85 tons for dollar coins
