A die clash is when the machine doesn't have a planchet between the dies. They two dies hit each other on the fields. (The fields are the outside part of the die, the devices are deeper into the die) Part of the outline of the devices can be see on the next coins that are struck from these dies. So what areas are affected?

This is an overlay of what position the dies would be in to leave marks on the other die. (just a simulation) But the out lines areas near the fields would be affected. (not the deeper design areas)

So most of the time the central areas are just affected. Leaving vertical areas affected on the obverse.

Click on image to enlarge. You can see the vertical lines from the columns on the obverse

On this coin, the dies appear to have been clashed three times, leaving a triple mark rotating slightly between clashes on the dies. So each coin will show this on each single strike. (dies clashed three different times, not the coin struck three different times as the design would also show the tripled devices on all the coin, both obverse and reverse)
This even occurs on the shield cents as well:

They are called prisoner cents cents as Abe
looks like he is behind bars.
