I read another tread where they used vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to get the dates out. Well I had 31 buffalos and only one that I couldn't get the date back.
This is what I got,

1913 type 1 - 3
type 2 - 5
1915 P - 3
1916 P - 4
D - 1
S - 1
1917 P - 3
D - 1
1918 P - 2
1919 P - 2
D - 1
1920 P - 2
S - 1
1927 P - 1

and 1 unknown.

I think I did good, I know they don't have any value but it does fill a couple of holes for me.

Dateless buffalo can be a problem. One exception is the 1913 Type 1. I believe the only year they produced the buffalo on raised mound, then changed to type 2 recessed mid run.

So if raised the date can be determined by the RDV. Thanks, Doug.

Halo1st, there are other ways, wish I'd copied it, but the hair ribbons will determine some other dates, 1920 I think was one. Yea, 1913 Ty1 raised mound in P-D-S.

Mcshilling, I've done that as well, makes good hole fillers until better...but I don't soak the 1913's, at least date can be known on those, maybe someone can post the info on IDing those other buffs!

Some acid dates are worth a few bucks , mainly the keys and semi-keys .

I have 3 nickels, I believe, with no date on them. Can/should I put them in this post and see how you might determine what year they are going by some of these other methods?

Thanks
Rest in Peace

Coincents, you can tell the raised mound 1913 easy enough, the others in my opinion are worthless as is, so why not "experiment". That's what I did, able to fill 5 holes for now. 50%/50% Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide, check every two hours to monitor progress...may take 8 or more hours to really show up if worn.

I'm in and out on this subject, cause no date is worthless, and a cleaned coin can result in the same.

That said if you have a key date that needs this kind treatment is basically low grade anyway. But unless you can reveal the date you don't know either way.

If I was to do it, I'd focus on the date area first and not soak or attack the whole coin in the process. Thanks, Doug.

It's hard to just do the date it will look different than the rest of the coin.

@ BigSilver Did you do before and after photos by chance?

Maybe someone here has before and after images of the coin to post?
