I bought a 1867 peso. It's beautiful but doesn't ping like silver. It's pretty dense. Anyone notice this?

Your Maximilian Peso should ring like silver. If it does not, you could have a serious problem. Have you weighed the coin? Please post pictures so wean try and help. Also if you know how to measure specific gravity, that test will tell you if the coin is silver. Another easy test is to see if the coin sticks to a magnet.

First off, welcome.

Closeup photos would be extremely helpful. In their absence, let's start off with the simplest test. Does a magnet stick to it? If not, then the next step would be to get a weight to at least a tenth of a gram (if you don't have a scale, any jewelry store ought to be able to do this for you, usually as a courtesy).

Where and for how much would lend context to the probability of its authenticity.

Edit: I saw after I posted that jfransch beat me to most of my points....

weight is on point - 26.5 grams, metal analyzer said it was 90% silver, it just doesn't ping like a Morgan...

A contemporay counterfeit wouldn't be 90%. A modern forger going to the trouble of using the correct silver content would most likely render it in better apparent condition than this. So I'll vote authentic based upon appearance and data, ring or lack thereof notwithstanding.

That rim damage on the reverse - possibly a test cut?

Are you pinging it by balancing it on one finger and striking the edge with another coin to listen to the ring or by flipping it onto a surface? Try both ways just do it gently don't want to damage it or nick it. It won't ping exactly like a morgan because the dimensions aren't exactly the same but it should have that typical drawn out silver ring.
