This is my first attempt at studying the varieties of Capped Bust half dollars. The Overton numbers I think it is called. I have about 10 or so Capped Bust half dollars. There are two sections I could have posted in, one to identify and another to grade but I wanted to know if I have identified this 1836 Capped Bust correctly first. The points I see are a 3 under the first 8 The flag of a thick 5 in 50 C. pointing upward. The position of the I under the second T in STATES. Do I have the 1836 over 1836 here? If you could post a grade and a confirm this is O-108 I would appreciate that. My grade estimate is in AU53. There is more luster than pictures show. Thank you!

EF-40, maybe 45. Somehow, obverse surfaces look etched and quite different from reverse surfaces.

It does appear to be an O-108.

One may have been taken in one light and the other in another place near my window. I am the worst at taking pictures. I'll try again. I'll post the best "as is" I can get in the grading forum section. Thanks for the input from you fellers. Much appreciated.

Here's the natural no flash nothing adjusted pictures I just took. I'll use these again in the grading forum. Pretty sure this is the 1836 over 1836 tho. Thanks.

I think you're right on there with the grade Coinfrog. I just looked at photograde pictures.

Thanks for the new pics.
Still at EF-45 tops, but surfaces now appear normal.

Nickel guy, I'm no pro, but I see the same thing Coinfrog does(I think). Some of the obverse lines look crisply defined where they are usually more smooth. The tip of the nose looks off too. I don't remember seeing one that turned up and came to a sharp point like that. Have you put it on a scale?

I got this image to overlay and make an animated gif of 1836 over 1836 O-108 from http://maibockaddict.com/1836-o-108...dollar.shtmlThat is a most educational place I must say. Took a little doing but it looks exactly the same. My image may not be exactly the same angle but darn close. The image of this guys 1836 says his is graded XF40 Here, check this out. Pretty cool huh?
