So by accident I found this ebay listing: 291551728758

Does-This-Note-Really-Deserve-A-65-Grade?

This note has been graded by PMG at 65.
The cert# verifies correctly at their site, though no pictures are shown.

PMG:

Quote:
65EPQ The note may have one or two minor distractions as a result of minor handling. The centering must be above average.

One or two, they say.
I can see at least seven.

The same image auto-adjusted. Everything is visible without the altering the image, of course, but it makes it easier to show what I mean.

Top-right corner, top margin, right margin, left margin, different sort of spots on the watermark, all corners (two rounded, bottom-right bumped, top-right visibly creased), and a handling crease at the bottom.

And that's before you check the other side.

Most of the stuff mentioned above is visible from the other side as well, plus there is something on the top margin above "Z". A mark from the wrapper at best, could also be a small tear.

So, how is that one or two minor distractions?

Even if you count all the margin discoloration as a single problem, that still leaves the corners, the crease at the bottom, the mark/tear on top, and the stains on the watermark.

Explain, please.

First thing I saw was the corners. I would think those alone would prevent a 65.

That's really surprising from PMG. But maybe they give world notes to the trainees...

Glad I'm not the only one to think so.

There is more, of course.

Here is a 64 with lots of very apparent stains or foxing along the margins - in their grading scale, toned paper, a small stain is only mentioned way down at 60. There are about 20 small stains on this one.

I've seen these before, I'm thinking there is a very finite supply of truly UNC notes in the classic issues and the pressure to grade may be affecting the outcomes.

Me, I'd grade this note an AU, nor buy it if a better example was available.

Yes TPG companies make mistakes AND may be guilty at times of gradeflating.

It's not limited to UNC notes, either. The Canadian Fiver was priced $30 above several nice raw notes in the same grade range.

I'm going to assume part of that is people trying to recover their grading costs.

But that's not apples:apples there; at least, I don't think so. The OP's note is over graded, I think we all agree on that. Are you saying yours are over-graded too?

They certainly seem over-graded to me.

Well, the Canadian note does have two creases through the design which are particularly visible from the front. Why 45 then? One could make the following statement: this note has two vertical creases but is otherwise so good that it makes the 45 grade nonetheless but there are handling marks visible everywhere so such a justification can't be supported.

And here's another interesting take on grading: GNDM archives link.

The note is cut on two sides, which cannot go unnoticed especially since it's uneven. Should be 210 mm wide. The seller mentions it in his description but the PMG label just says "Pinholes". They saw it fit to mention the pinholes but not the fact that two margins are almost non-existent?
Really? No comment, no NET designation?

Cert# verifies correctly.

PMG have a video on youtube showing one of the expert banknote graders. Count how long he takes to grade a note. Watch the way he handles the note and how many notes he grades in the time period. Now imagine yourself doing this for 8hrs a day five days a week. Also there is Friday afternoon 15minutes before knockoff time or to much wild turkey.
