What are your thoughts on this thaler?

The grade is really getting to me, I can't seem to figure it why it has a "damaged-repaired" grading. Is it because of the small dents on the obverse?

Any thoughts on the grade and potential value would be appreciated. I just have no idea how to place this coin.

@matt, I'm wondering if perhaps someone tried to bring back detail to some of the flat spots by tooling in strands of hair? I can't tell for sure, but that is my best guess.

Definitely the obverse with evident tooling. These are common types which you can definitely improve on. Here are mine - https://www.taleruniverse.com/the-t...i-1657-1705/

Thanks guys. How much do you think it would sell for if I were to upgrade it?

I am sorry to ask, but this sounds new to me.

How do you "upgrade" a coin?

@ctv, I think that Matt means sell or trade to get a similar piece that is higher grade or at least not "details".

@Matt, to answer your question, I would generally estimate that each issue causes one whole grade drop in value. For your coin, the obv damage and the tooling would drop it by two grades (to Fine) for the purpose of determining value. Others may have other rules of thumb and will hopefully weigh in also.
